Marco Island is just minutes away from Everglades National Park among other nature preserves you can discover. You’ll find them located near the end of Shell Island Road. Paddle a kayak through mangrove tunnels or choose the farther reaching tour aboard their powered skiff. The 110,000 acre reserve combines an incredible mangrove forest and protected waters.

Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve is one of only twenty-nine protected reserves in the US. Rates for a family of 4 can run upwards of $500 for a private trip, or you can join a charter for much less per person.Īnd the best part of fishing in Marco Island? They’re delicious! Sub-tropical species such as tarpon, snook, redfish and sea trout linger in the shallows while deep water excursions in the Gulf of Mexico reward you with grouper, snapper, king mackerel, tuna, shark and cobia. Surrounded by water with the 10,000 Islands to the east and the Gulf of Mexico to the west, Marco Island is an anglers paradise for backwater fishing, offshore fishing, fly fishing and shore fishing. Marco Island has some of the best year round Sportfishing in the world. To reach the boardwalk, park in front of the building and take the path on the right to enter the walk at the back of the building. In 1 mile the parking area will be on the right. To get there from Marco Island, drive 8.9 miles (about 15 minutes) on US951, then turn left onto Shell Island Road. Signs along the boardwalk help to identify and understand the flora and fauna in the different habitats making for an easy self-guided tour. Maintained by the Conservancy of Southwest Florida, this one-half mile long boardwalk loop showcases seven habitats in the complex local ecosystem and is a bird watcher’s paradise at the right time of year.

Calusa Island Marina on Goodland and Isle of Capri Marina on the Isle of Capri are also recommended. Several marinas around Marco will rent boats: Rose Marina and Walker’s Hideaway Marina on Marco are two excellent marinas.

The water is super shallow (as shallow as a few inches to a foot in some areas) and pontoon boats are a great way to enjoy a day on the water and not have to worry about running aground.

If you have zero experience operating a boat but want to treat your kids to a day on the water swimming, shelling, and exploring, rent a pontoon boat and glide around the calm inlets all around Marco Island.
